More American Heroes

Rico, Josh, Paul

Paul Schaus       Josh Sweeney       Rico Roman

Recognize these guys? No? Really? OK, I didn’t either…until Saturday. That’s when I read a newspaper article about Josh Sweeney. It was so interesting I Googled him (since when is a made up word like Googled actually a verb?). Anyway, it seems that he is a member of the U.S. Paralympic Sled Hockey team. AND…wait for it…OK…ready?…he made the winning, in fact the only, goal for Team Semper Fi to win a gold medal at the Sochi Olympics.

Everyone on the Paralympic Sled Hockey team is either an amputee or has a medical condition rendering one or both legs immobile. Hence the name Paralympic. These three guys, however, are also ‘Wounded Warriors’. Paul, Josh, and Rico are all military veterans wounded in action overseas.

Josh Sweeney

Josh -2

Josh Sweeney, 27, from Glendale (Phoenix) Arizona, joined the Marines in 2005 right out of high school. In October 2009, while serving in Nowzad, Afghanistan he stepped on an IED (improvised explosive device) losing both his legs. Josh spent months in rehab at Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio, Texas. He had been a hockey player in high school and after being discharged he tried a few adaptive sports, but he had never heard of sled hockey. Then he went to a sled hockey game with his family and inspiration struck.

He began playing and in 2011 he made the USA Hockey national team. In 2012 they won the International Paralympic Committee Ice Sledge Hockey World Championships A in Hamar, Norway. Then the team took silver in the 2013 world championships. In December 2013, he was nominated to the 2014 U.S. Paralympic Sled Hockey Team by USA Hockey,

He was introduced to sled hockey by Operation Comfort, an organization dedicated to assisting injured U.S. service personnel while at the Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio, Texas.

From 2009-11, Rico was a member of the San Antonio Rampage Sled Hockey club, which is made up entirely of military veterans. He also played with the Dallas Stars sled team in 2012, helping the team to the 2012 USA Hockey Sled Classic Division A Championship.

Rico also participates in handcycling, wheelchair basketball and wheelchair football. Within a year of his amputation, Roman completed two bike marathons and rode 150 miles in a day to raise money for multiple sclerosis research. He currently lives in Wincrest, Texas with wife and two children.

Paul Schaus

Paul - 1

Twenty five year old Marine Paul Schaus from Buffalo, NY, lost both his legs to a landmine in Helmand Province, Afghanistan on June 5, 2009 while on his second deployment. He was first airlifted to Landstuhl, Germany. He was eventually transferred state-side and spent a month at Bethesda Naval Medical Center before finally being moved to Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Md. Paul began playing Sled Hockey on the USA Warrior Hockey Team while still in rehab. He played two seasons (2010-2011) with the USA Warriors. Paul also played with the Buffalo Sabres Sled Hockey Team, and helped them win two straight USA Hockey Sled Classic Championship titles in 2011 and 2012. After a year on the U.S. National Development Sled Hockey Team from 2011-12, Paul made the U.S. National Sled Hockey Team for the 2012-13 season.

Abibliophobia – Tsundoku

How to use this book

I recently learned two new words.  The first word is abibliophobia.  It is defined as “an intense, all consuming fear of running out of things to read.”

One article said abibliophobia is an “amusing vocabulary item composed of the Greek prefix a (meaning not) + biblio (book) + o + phobos (fear) + ia (a nominal suffix).  Yeah, I guess.  The article went on to say the word abibliophobia is correctly constructed, so you can use it without breaking any rules of English grammar.  Great.  I’ll be getting that into my everyday vocabulary right away.

Sarah Wendell over at Smart Bitches, Trashy Books  loves the word so much she had an illustrated definition made for the word.

The word even has its own Facebook page.  The page was started in October 2012, has three posts on it, and 12 people like it.  Guess the word isn’t catching on as fast as they thought.

I sometimes get a little anxious when I don’t have a book I am actively reading, but I don’t think I have abibliophobia.  No.  I couldn’t possibly have it.  Because there is this word.  Tsundoku.  This is a Japanese word pun from tsumu – to pile up, and doku – to read.  It means the “act of leaving a book unread after acquiring it, typically piled up together with other such unread books.”

Yep.  That’s me.  The bookshelves are stuffed full.  Then there are boxes of books, baskets full of books, piles of books on desks, dressers, nightstand, end tables, the dining table, and on the floor in the corners.

pile of books

I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Belly Tattoos

I have been seeing more pictures of hunkalicious guys with great belly tattoos.  I’m not sure why – but I just love them. Uh, love the pictures, love the belly tattoos…love, love, love… belly tattoo

I don’t know who either of these guys are, but I drool anyway.

OK – what’s with these tats?  I love these, especially the one around his belly button.  This is Alejandro Corzo and there are tons of pictures of him if you Google his name.  I could only find one other picture of him (on his Facebook page) with these tattoos.  I hope this is a recent picture and they aren’t fake.  Anyhoo – he is a Spanish model and actor.  He has a website, is on twitter, Instagram, Facebook, and can be seen at Model Management.  Check him out. belly tattoo-3

OK – I don’t love ALL the belly tattoos.belly tattoo-4

The Whole Package

So…a couple of weeks ago I promised you more on this hunkalicious guy. Kellen-Angelo

I first saw a few photos of him on Pinterest.  When I was able to get up off the floor and back into my chair, I started looking for him in the cyber universe.  Most of the pictures gave his name as Kellen Jamison and a couple identified him as Angelo Cruz.  I couldn’t find anything else on him under Angelo Cruz, so don’t know where that even came from.

However, under Kellen Jamison he is all over Olivia Cunning’s Blog (  In her book Touch Me, Kellen Jamison is the best friend of the main character Owen.  She apparently found these pictures while writing her book and just knew that this guy was Kellen.  So now if you Google Kellen Jamison, you get are pictures of this guy and links to Olivia’s blog.

It took a while…though I’m getting better at this cyber stalking stuff all the time…but I finally found out who he really is. Angel-1

This is model Angel Macho.  He has two Facebook pages, a personal one ( where he mostly posts droolable pictures, and a fan page ( where there is an occasional snapshot photo and a fan of the week contest.

He is an Israeli/Spanish software engineer.  He speaks English, French, Spanish, Hebrew, and German.  No, really…that’s what his Facebook pages say.  He has a Band Page   ( ) whatever that is.  There is one song and a few pictures on it.  He is on Instagram (, and has a couple of Youtube videos.

Angel is the whole package; smart, educated, sexy, and drop dead gorgeous.  So, go ahead… take a few deep breaths…then Google him.  Big sigh. Angel - 3

Dayum…….I just love that Bad Boy look… Angel-2
